Twitter rolled out a new homepage design and with a tweet let us all know about it. The new Twitter homepage design puts more emphasis on the real-time stream as it is front and center. Twitter also rolled out a feature called “Top Tweets,” which are highlighted on the homepage. I have been waiting for the Top Tweets feature to be unleashed for awhile now as it is offers social recommendations. Top Tweets algorithmically selects and retweets some of the most interesting tweets spreading across Twitter. So in essence, Twitter had just started highlighting the most popular items across the network much like Digg does on its homepage based on active inputs. Facebook also has a similar algorithmic dimension to its News Feed but it is only viewable by you and each News Feed is slightly different based on who you are friends with. As the service continues to grow finding the most interesting or relevant tweets in the stream continues become more difficult. I expect personalized recommendations could be next for Twitter.
As for the new homepage design (shown below), it is definitely more alive with the live stream of tweets flowing in.
