Today celebrity Tyra Banks further expanded the reach of her investment company, Fierce Capital, with an investment in Locket, an Android application that brings content to smartphone lock screens. While this is not her first experience with the world of tech startups, this marks her first attempt to break into the advertising tech space.
In only a few months, Locket has made a massive leap to over 350,000 users, serving over 10 million impressions every day. Additionally, it was named the winner of GMIC’s 2013 App Attack competition and, accordingly, caught Banks’ attention.
“It’s hard to believe that this idea began with a group of young entrepreneurs working in a small apartment, living off of pizza and Ramen to make their startup a reality,” says Banks. “Yunha Kim, the CEO, is a kick-ass female living with five of her male team members to bring her vision to life … disrupting the mobile marketing world.”
To curate a strong user base, Locket recently launched an open SDK that allows developers to publish their business content on users’ lock screens. This effectively turns the lock screen into ripe real estate to display content and re-engage user bases.
Tomorrow, November 20,Banks and Locket will be co-hosting an Instagram contest that promises one of Banks’ followers a free Locket advertisement from which to promote their own business. Anyone who wants to enter must post a picture on Instagram of the product or service with the hashtag #LocketAD by 11:59 pm EST on Monday November 25: Good luck!
