I’m sure you’ve all heard of the texting app WhatsApp. It was created in 2009 and has been growing steadily ever since. As of April 2015, this app has more than 800 million active users. You probably also know that it was acquired by Facebook in February 2014 (on Valentines Day no less…how romantic). It was acquired for $19 billion which beat out Google’s offer of $10 billion.
WhatsApp was founded in 2009 by Jan Koum and Brian Acton, former Yahoo employees. The original app had one simple purpose: to send status updates to people in your network. This was back in the day when people still had Blackberrys, and the Apple iPhone had just launched push notifications (yes…there was a time when push notifications were not even a thing).
I suppose there’s no point in me going on and on about WhatsApp when there’s an infographic below. I mean, that’s the point of infographics anyway–they’re more interesting than reading a wall of text.
