When most people think of public transportation, they think of the typical options that usually come to mind: train, bus or taxi. The Zipcar service kicked off a brand new way for people to get around in urban environments, and more services like it are popping up all the time. Phil Pauley’s UK-based Wi-Fly is the first Semi Autonomous Public Transport Pod, and it’s definitely a fun and unique way to get around the city.

The Wi-Fly is the first in a series of personalized public and private transportation devices that requires the driver to stand while driving. It uses a range of street recognition software and GPS guidance systems to ensure it can be wirelessly upgraded for performance and maintenance updates. Wi-Fly Pods will be strategically located around public transportation hubs, so keep your eyes open for them in your city.

To use a Wi-Fly Pod, individuals can swipe their Oyster, debit or credit cards and will be charged on a time distance calculation. If an individual needs to hire a unit for an extended period of time, it will be available for that as well. The Pod uses state-of-the-art road surveying and identification GPS software, in conjunction with autonomous awareness, through a network wireless connectivity along strategic points. It is made street responsive through interactive camera intelligence.

Once you’ve arrived at your destination, the Pod will return itself to the nearest strategic location and attach itself to the back of the queue of Pods to recharge. The cabin is large enough for an adult passenger to stand next to the driver, or for two older children standing on either side of the driver. It even has space for groceries, shopping bags, or whatever you may be carrying. The Pod has a maximum speed of 30mph and will require the driver to be at least 16 years of age, so don’t expect to be going for any joyrides!
