Serial entrepreneur and investor Mark Cuban has been quoted as saying the following: “I think the next generation of entertainment is experiential, where people go out of the house and go and get a unique experience.” This experiential entertainment is what Wooter is all about.
Wooter, based out of Staten Island, was recently featured in SI Live. They provide a platform where you can find localized sports and activities. They serve as the search marketplace for anything from paddle boarding, to sky diving, to racing Formula 1 cars, and are the middleman between the vendors who want to get their activities out there and the public who wants to find new and exciting things to do.
The idea was the brainchild of four high school friends (Alex Kagan, 21, David Kleyman, 20, Alex Aleksandrovski, 22, and Dima Korenblyum, 22) who all played YMCA basketball together. Because of their shared love of sports they decided to add soccer to their list of activities. However, finding a league and a team to join proved more challenging than they had anticipated.
“We thought finding a league would be easy.” said co-founder Alex Kagan in an interview with SI Live. “Instead, a prolonged Google search yielded bad and confusing results — links to expired leagues, sites with unclear schedules, outdated information, and no way to compare leagues and activities side-by-side,” said Kagan.
Before starting up, the team did some research into how to streamline the search for recreational sports teams. They spoke with merchants and vendors to figure out where the information gaps existed, and how they could make the process more transparent.
“Wooter aggregates the best sports and activities in one place with clear information and pricing to help people enjoy the leagues and activities they’re searching for.” says co-founder Alex Aleksandrovski.
Wooter is free to anyone searching for a sport or activity. They can filter activities by, zip code, price, distance, or reviews. For merchants, Wooter only charges at 2.5% processing fee every time they get a customer. The merchants also get access to a dashboard where they can keep track of new customers and revenue.
Wooter already has over 1000 businesses on board, including sports leagues, facilities, and recreational organizations. The founders attribute their success to their long friendship and respect for each other as entrepreneurs.
“It takes the right type of people to make it (a company) work. We have the right dynamic. Even when it gets tough, we just work it out. We can separate business from being friends,” said Kagan.
