Part of starting up is failure – that’s a given. It’s never easy, but at the same time it’s a learning process and long does the entrepreneur last who sees failure in this light.

Zainab Zaki was the COO at Tappedin, a social discovery tool for professional networking, before they closed their doors. For Zaki, it was a great adventure but, as previously stated, she learned a lot from her failures there.

The biggest lesson was to avoid an extreme and almost punishing focus on product-market fit. Zaki and her team at Tappedin had trouble getting traction, spinning their wheels during brainstorming and not going very far. The problem was that they never paid attention to who would actually want to buy the app and use it.

Zaki would tell any entrepreneur who’s just now starting out to firmly hold to the right metrics as well. Whether it’s website traffic, app downloads, or demographic studies, it’s crucial for you to focus on relevant metrics that will help you grow to ultimate success.
