Charlene Li is the CEO of Altimeter Group, an organization that helps leaders thrive with disruption. She launched her third book, The Engaged Leader, during SXSW and shared with us the reasons she decided to write this book.

Leaders are accustomed to having authority without getting close to people. But with the evolution of social media engagement, leaders who have already signed on to the understanding that businesses need an online, “personal” presence are finding that they need to understand how to develop their own relationship with their audience. “It takes a lot more work to be open,” Li told us.
There are people who are not only leaders themselves, but people who work with large organizations to answer questions about openness, authenticity, and transparency. And this book helps them answer those questions. What does it mean to be a leader in this space? Does getting closer to people erode authority and credibility?
Li explains that there is an art and science of listening, sharing, and engaging. Strategizing these mechanics is the value that The Engaged Leader offers to its reader.
As for the disruption that Altimeter Group helps businesses to understand, it’s important to constantly research how business models are shifting. One exciting current example of disruption today is the unedited capture of moments that apps like Meerkat are utilizing. “This is on the edge, and because of that, it’s raw. It’s going to be really real,” adds Li. She adds that getting to know each other on a more personal way through online technologies is definitely the most exciting tech trend on the horizon.
