“March for Innovation”: The Tech Industry’s Response to Immigration Reform

Feb 25, 2013

Launch

Today, leaders in the tech industry launched the March for Innovation, a virtual “march” – in essence, an online campaign – to encourage US politicians to make immigration policies more open to skilled workers. They support visas for startup founders and employees, and permanent residence for foreign STEM graduates of US universities.

“There has been no substantive reform of our immigration laws since 1965. Immigration has been treated as a political football rather than a serious policy issue requiring reasoned debate. Now is the time for change. We march to ensure that the broad immigration bills being considered in Congress include provisions to boost innovation and entrepreneurship,” they say.

The actual march, a day where supporters will blast out their message online, will happen in late spring.

The march is led by the Partnership for a New American Economy, which is co-chaired by (among others) NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg and Microsoft CEO Steven Ballmer.
