This morning, Science Inc. launched their latest operation – Fresh Dish – a weekly DIY dinner delivery service. The LA-based startup delivers ingredients and detailed recipes for the time-starved family that can’t fit numerous trips to the grocery store into their schedule. The company is backed by $500,000 from Battery Ventures.
“The inspiration behind Fresh Dish was really a personal situation. My wife and I both work, and we have a 5-year-old son,” says Fresh Dish co-founder and CEO, Steve Goldstein. “Meal time is a real challenge for us – it’s stressful, it’s hard, and we don’t have the time to put a good meal on the table. I was thinking that there must be an easier way and that’s where the idea for Fresh Dish came from.”
According to Goldstein, Fresh Dish’s focus is to make homemade dinners simple, easy, and convenient without sacrificing on taste or health. By offering four to eight meal choices each week and delivering the ingredients in pre-measured containers, the cook can have a delicious meal to table within a half hour. For the more adept chef, Fresh Dish offers more intricate options – on their website, each meal is indicated by number of ingredients, cooking time, and overall complexity.
“An average family spends an average of over 2.5 hours planning, shopping for, and preparing one home-cooked meal. Americans also spend an eye-popping $478 billion annually on groceries, and throw out approximately 40% of the food they buy,” says Science CEO Michael Jones. “Fresh Dish is going to change how we save money and make it easier for families to spend time together over meals by eliminating all the time-consuming and money-soaking chores that come with meal planning.”
Fresh Dish is available in most areas in California, Nevada, and Arizona and plans to launch nationwide in the near future. Look for their iOS app to launch in the weeks to come as well.
