Industry trends indicate that by 2020, there will be 1.4 million computing jobs available.
On the surface this sounds great, but there’s a problem. According to Code.org, colleges will only graduate 400,000 computer science student by 2020. That translates to 2.4 percent of students graduating with a degree in computer science.
Technology is no longer seen as the thing that “nerdy” people tinker with in their garages. We’re starting to see athletes, celebrities, and children of all ages obsess over learning how technology works.
But despite this curiosity, there’s still an obvious gap in the number of college students actively pursuing computer science degrees.
The good news is, companies aren’t sitting around twiddling their thumbs. From startups like Codecademy to organizations like Girls Who Code, businesses of all shapes and sizes are realizing the importance of investing in the future of tech.
What are your thoughts?
Now, the million-dollar question… Will the gap between the number of computing jobs and computer science degrees ever shrink, or will it continue to increase?
