If you’ve ever been in between jobs and had to look for temporary employment, you’ve probably reached out to a staffing agency. You’ve also probably learned the kinds of jobs that these agencies typically recruit for; it’s a lot of paper pushing in law firms, filing, answering phones, and other basic office work that does not require a lot of training. Typically, these jobs are white-collar (albeit low-level), stock-up-on-khakis-because-you’ll-be-wearing-them-a-lot kind of jobs.
However, until recently, there wasn’t a one-stop-shop for temporary blue collar positions. Now there is BlueCrew to fill that gap. BlueCrew launched in April 2015 as an on-demand, data-driven staffing platform for blue-collar jobs. In the 11 months since their launch they’ve received $3 million in funding from investors including Y Combinator, Index Ventures, Sound Ventures, Liquid 2 Ventures and Stanford StartX. They’ve also recently announced some feature additions and upgrades.
“BlueCrew’s mission is to make it dramatically easier and faster for companies to identify and select the most talented and experienced workers in a wide variety of roles,” said Gino Rooney, cofounder and CEO of BlueCrew in a statement. “In our first ten months, we have gained a lot of traction with our data-driven approach to staffing. BlueCrew is changing the way companies staff and empowering workers in the gig economy to move from contract work to opportunities with a clear career path.”
It didn’t take long for employers and those seeking work to realize that BlueCrew was addressing a long-standing need. But while the original platform was very successful, there were still some improvements to be made. The BlueCrew team listened to their customers and recently made the following upgrades:
- A mobile management app that gives shift managers easy access to information on the performance of workers including on-time record, shifts worked and other performance metrics;
- A new GPS timecard solution so workers can automatically clock in and out directly from the mobile app on their smartphones. This ensures complete transparency between employer and worker on the reliability and location of any worker at any time.
“BlueCrew has changed the way we fill temporary positions, particularly during our peak times of business,” said Dan Lucht, the general manager of Zephyr Express, a California-based fine wine storage and delivery service, in a statement. “During the Super Bowl week, BlueCrew workers played a critical role in helping us meet the high demand for wine deliveries. We now use them to address last minute staffing requirements and they always answer the call with experienced and skilled people. The newBlueCrew platform features, particularly the GPS timecard, will make it even easier for us to transparently communicate with and manage temporary workers. BlueCrew is the ideal model for the on-demand staffing industry.”
