Remember when taking a picture and making a video were jobs for ‘professionals’ – specialized skills that only those who were talented and trained could do. Every one of us is a photographer and videographer now. Instagram and Youtube have revlolutionized the way we perceive photography and videography. They have made each of us feel capable of creating images and videos on our own.
What if we could do the same with music? Music stills remains one of those haloed professions in which success is largely determined by natural talent and luck. Creating music is still a rare skill possessed by a select few. Meludia is here to change that.
Meludia is a web app that allows you to train your musical ear so you too can play and create music. It uses our natural ability to recognize patterns and imitate them – which is how we naturally learnt language as babies – to learn the language of music. We caught up with the CEO Bastien Sanna, who is based in Paris, France and asked him to share lessons learned on the team’s journey so far with Meludia.
You’ve been doing this for 3 years now. What has been a hard lesson startup life has taught you?
The hardest thing in building a company is not to build a world-class team. It is to manage it and build a common unique vision.
What do you hope to achieve with Meludia?
Music education has not evolved for 200 years. It is inefficient and discriminative – 85% of children drop out of music before the age of 15. This stems from the absence of understanding how humans learn and perceive music. With Meludia we hope to enhance the brain processes related to hearing, playing, singing and composing music so that learning music is engaging, effective and available for everyone. We want Meludia to be the perfect companion to every music learning activity, for all levels and all styles.
What do you personally believe in that goes against commonly accepted startup wisdom?
Everyone always says “Listen to your users to build your product.” But I don’t completely agree. I believe that true innovations take a long time to be conceived and need a solid vision to be implemented.
What keeps you getting out of bed everyday to work on Meludia?
Our ambition which is making music education engaging and enjoyable. And my team – I deeply appreciate their personality and their motivation towards the project. I really want to protect them. This is why I always stay motivated on the bad days.
To start your own musical journey, sign up for Meludia now and start playing their games.
