They led a seed round of $1.5 million which also included Blu Ventures, a Vienna-based Angel group. Jonathon Perelli, serial entrepreneur and founder of Fortify Ventures is a member of the Virginia Tech Investor Network and made the announcement on his Facebook page on Wednesday, declaring “Our first investment has been made! The Virginia Tech Investor Network led a $1.5M round in a Virginia cyber security firm, Threat Quotient.”
ThreatQuotient Inc. is a cybersecurity firm working out of AOL’s Fishbowl Labs in Dulles. Their product is a threat intelligence platform that aggregates information from multiple sources, including government and commercial data feeds to defend against potential cyber attacks. The company was founded in March 2013 and last summer was selected to present at the Mid-Atlantic Venture Association’s TechBUZZ 2014 Summer Event.
The Virginia Tech Investor Network was created in October of last year, launched by Virginia Tech’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. They seek to invest specifically in startups in which a founder, board member, or active investor is a Virginia Tech graduate, student, or faculty member, said Derick Maggard, director of the center.
“It’s about Hokies funding Hokies,” Maggard said. “We are seeking start-ups for seed and early-stage investments between $250,000 and $1 million.” For start-ups that require larger investments up to $2 million, the group will syndicate with other angel investors and venture capitalists. Start-ups, he said, can be located anywhere in the country.
The network currently has 76 members throughout the DC and Blacksburg, VA areas. They hope to screen up to twelve startups a year and hopefully invest in six of them.
