Waveborn Sunglasses Signs Troy Aikman as Official Spokesperson

A DC based socially conscious sunglasses company just signed one of the most successful NFL quarterbacks of all time as their official spokesperson.

Waveborn Sunglasses just announced a four-year deal with Troy Aikman that will bring him on as their official ambassador and spokesperson.

“Signing Troy Aikman represents a truly special moment for the brand, as Waveborn reaches to new heights. Having Troy join the Waveborn team is a testament to Waveborn’s expansive growth. With the addition of Aikman, we are excited about the great success to come during our fifth summer and over the next four years,” said Mike Malloy, Waveborn CEO, in a statement.

Waveborn has a mission to change how people see the world. Similar to TOMS, they are a for-purpose company, but instead of shoes they sell sunglasses. For each pair of sunglasses sold, they help someone in need receive vision-saving cataract surgery.

The startup has partnered with SEE International,  a nonprofit that raises money for sight-restoring surgery and blindness prevention eyecare in underserved communities around the world. They provide  sustainable medical, surgical, and educational services and deploy small surgical clinics in cooperation with local health authorities.

As part of the deal with Aikman, he will wear Waveborn Sunglasses and earn a small percentage of vesting equity in the company. Aikman will also be featured in sales and marketing campaigns. The visibility will hopefully help the brand increase distribution through new channels.

“I am really excited to team up with Waveborn and support their global mission. I absolutely love their handcrafted Italian frames and polarized Carl Zeiss lenses,” said Aikman in a statement. “I believe in the brand. Together we can create an even bigger impact on the global eye care community to fund more life changing cataract surgeries through our non-profit partner, SEE International.”

Waveborn was a semifinalist in the 2014 Startup of the Year Competition at Tech.Co's annual Celebrate Conference.
