A lot has changed since Kate Brodock started the Boston chapter of Girls in Tech in 2007. Now the President of Girls in Tech Global, Brodock is focused more than ever on supporting women who want to work in this mostly male space, while also helping current tech leaders understand the value of getting more women into tech positions as coders and leaders.
One of the main challenges her organization faces is helping to build the confidence in women to see how they fit into the larger tech scene. But, Brodock and her team must do so not for the sake of promoting diversity, but for an improved tech industry as a whole. After all — as Brodock notes — if women are the major consumers of e-commerce companies, wouldn’t those same companies benefit from having more women on their teams?
Brodock joined us for an interview at our SXSW Startup Celebration sponsored by .CO and CEA. She talked about the ways in which Girls in Tech is pushing past the surface goal of simply increasing the number of women in tech and, instead, helping leaders understand how doing so can bring tangible benefits. Here’s the video.
