Whether you’re out camping or simply trying to survive the zombie apocalypse, there will come a time when you need to turn to your mobile device. Maybe you’re trying to reach emergency service when the power is out, or you need Postmates to make an urgent Chipotle delivery out in the woods; regardless, for good and for bad, smartphones have become an essential tool in our everyday lives, and having it die on you when you need it most is a terrible ordeal. Thankfully, thanks to the the Candle Charger by Stower, the world has been gifted with a way to charge our phones with a candle.

Currently a project on Kickstarter, the Candle Charger is the first charger of its kind that transforms thermal energy from a candle into electricity to power your smartphone (or any other USB device). Through the magic of science, all you need to power up the device is a candle and a little bit of water. Simply, all you need to do is fill the water bath with 5 ounces of water, light a candle and place it in the designated area in the Candle Charger, and then plug the USB cord into a device that you want charged – it’s that simple.

According to the Kickstarter page, the Candle Charger is a follow-up project to Stower’s first successful product, the FlameStower, which also utilized the power of fire to charge devices. The Candle Charger, however, is a much needed and more efficient version in that it allows you to use a candle’s flame (an everyday household product) to create the electricity.
