BioBeats today announced a successful seed funding round, hauling in a total of $650,000. The funds did not come from groups that traditionally donate to medically affiliated startups. Rather, it came from a host of Hollywood’s finest: Will Smith, Scooter Braun, and Damon Wayans, to name a few.
Nadeem Kassam, David Morelli, and Dr. David Plans have created a reactive technology with their startup, BioBeats, which utilizes your smartphone to learn your biometric data. The iOS app then takes the data and transforms it into engaging and exciting music that can help you exercise, meditate, and stave off disease.
Living a healthier life is as easy as placing your fingers on key points of your smartphone to have your heart beat read. Additionally, BioBeats can pull in data from a wide range of other devices that will work with it, like FitBit, Nike+ FuelBand, and Jawbone Up.
As your heart rate increases, so does the pace of the music, and as you slow, it slows. The technology is so adaptive that it can actually detect an unhealthy heart rate and automatically slow the pace down to get your heart rate back to a healthy range.
“It’s one thing just to wear a device and have data about your body,” says Kassam. “It is a whole other thing to move that data to a platform that will make it engaging.”
The team at BioBeats wants to give people who need encouragement a multitude of reasons to stick with their wellness regimen. In that vein, they are planning to develop a set of consumer tools as well as research applications in the future. Android users can expect to see an app at some point as well.
