ExpressVPN Acquired by Cybersecurity Firm for Nearly $1 Billion

It’s been a big week for (almost) billion dollar deals, as ExpressVPN has officially been acquired by Kape Technologies to the tune of $936 million.

Cybersecurity has become a major priority for individuals and businesses alike, with security breaches and ransomware attacks becoming all too common throughout the world. ExpressVPN Acquired by Kape Technologies

Announced in a press release this week, cybersecurity firm Kape Technologies — based in the UK and Israel — will acquire ExpressVPN — based in the British Virgin Islands — for $936 million.

“We’ve admired the ExpressVPN team’s relentless pursuit of excellence and innovation and are excited to welcome them to Kape,” said Ido Erlichman, CEO of Kape Technologies.

Kape also mentioned in the press release that the acquisition would nearly double their customer reach from three million to six million, and that Kape is now “more committed than ever to innovating and delivering the tools internet users need to protect their data and rights.”

With this acquisition, Kape continues its security crusade to become a big name in the VPN space, a market that is poised to reach $92.4 billion by 2026. Having already acquired CyberGhost VPN in 2017, the cybersecurity firm is making some serious moves, distancing itself from its questionable past.

What is Kape Technologies?

Kape Technologies is a UK-Israeli based cybersecurity firm that came into existence in 2018. Before that, the company was known as Crossrider, and didn’t have the best track record when it came to cybersecurity.

In fact, the company’s primary means of revenue was nefarious adware, which would allow third parties to redirect user traffic to advertisers in service of harvesting personal data. Fortunately, since the name change, Kape Technologies has been on the side of security.

“We have completely broken away from the ad-tech world and over the past year we have proven our major capabilities in cybersecurity that was demonstrated by the solid growth in top line and profitability,” said Ido Erlichman in a statement.

With acquisitions of CyberGhost and now ExpressVPN, it does seem Kape has turned over a new leaf and is committed to making the world a more secure place, rather than one riddled with ads and security breaches, but only time will tell.
