While some college towns tend to empty out during the summer months, DC comes alive with students from around the country who come to intern at some of the country's best companies, and of course, the US Government. But there's another option that students might not be aware of. Tech startups. There are lots of young, growing tech companies who are offering some of the most interesting internship opportunities out there. Forget making photocopies – roll up your sleeves and prepare to become a part of the team.

And now there's an easy way to find the startups and tech companies who have openings for the summer. DC Tech Summer is a summer internship program designed to engage the country's brightest budding technologists while helping DC area startups attract the best tech talent.

DC Tech Summer matches high school, college and graduate students from across the country to the DC area startups. The program organizes events for participants, exposing them to the local startup community, networking opportunities and the mentorship from experienced entrepreneurs and investors.  The application is easy and simple.  Instead of sending off dozens of emails, filling out the DC Tech Summer “common app” automatically applies students to all the technology internships in the region.

Opportunities cover a range of fields, from computer science and design, to writing, marketing and finance.  Applicants will be matched with several potential companies, at which point they'll have the opportunity to speak with them directly.  Additionally, DC Tech Summer is hosting two events to help applicants learn more about the participating companies and opportunities.  In partnership with BrazenCareerist, applicants will be able to connect online with potential employees through DC Tech Summer's Network Roulette, and an in-person career fair in DC follows on May 5th to offer applicants another chance to meet directly with the startups.

Mentorship will be provided by the recently formed FounderCorps, and area venture capitalists.  Event partners include DC Tech Meetup and Proudly Made in DC.  About two dozen venture backed companies have signed up to participate, including OPOWERLivingSocial and POPVOX.

DC Tech Summer was founded to improve the talent pipeline for early stage DC technology companies. The biggest challenge facing startup communities across the country is the recruitment of technical and tech savvy talent.  This talent gap is becoming increasingly evident in the DC region, as new companies are founded each month and existing companies continue to recruit. By positioning DC as a tech internship destination, the program not only increases the number of job candidates for area companies, but exposes the DC area as a destination for high tech career opportunities.

DC Tech Summer was founded by local startup founders Zvi Band (Structo), Ryan Healy (BrazenCareerist), and Michael Mayernick (Spinnakr) along with local venture capitalist Bobby Ocampo (Grotech).
