Take a Digital Detox and Reevaluate your Relationship with Technology

Does your finger always itch to send text messages? Do you have this irresistible feeling to check email or chat messages every five seconds? Does spending a day without Smartphone seems like totally absurd idea to you? Then you must be suffering from tech addiction.

In recent years, the term ‘nomophobia’ is heard quite often. Considered to be a relatively modern affliction, nomophobia-affected persons just can’t imagine a day without mobile contact. Hence there arises the need of taking a digital sabbatical. The modern generation’s excessive tech addition has resulted in phrasing the term ‘digital detox’.

Meaning of Digital Detox

The term refers to a certain period of time when the person refrains from using any kind of technology, be it the Smartphone, touch screens, or laptops. This vacation from technology allows you time to concentrate on other activities which you enjoy doing.

Digital Detox is an innovative concept, meant to replenish your own battery. You can decide the time frame. While some stick to 24 hours, many prefer to go on actual retreats.

Why do you need digital detox?

The modern lifestyle has become such that your attention gets diverted into different directions. Some are actually addicted to technology whereas many are forced to adapt a tech-enabled lifestyle because of their work profiles.

Over time such tech addition starts affecting the person’s productivity. Then he feels the need to breathe between endless tweets, emails, SMSs and phone calls. This is when the person wants to go for a digital detox program.

Another benefit of such a vacation is that you get to enjoy quality time with friends and family members. Undoubtedly this is far superior to spending time staring at your Smartphone.

How to take the digital sabbatical?

Just press the off button on all your digital devices and you are in digital detoxification.

Sound simple? Doing this is surprisingly difficult in this contemporary world, where people have become so accustomed to stay constantly connected. So, be motivated by reminding yourself why such a digital vacation period is good for you. Some do it because they want to experience how it feels to remain digitally disconnected. Again, many need valuable thinking time to recharge their own batteries.

  • Feel free to plan your digital detox the way you want. Choose a suitable time to start it.
  • Many prefer weekends or holidays to go on a digital vacation. Inform your friends, colleagues or relatives about your plan so that they desist from contacting you via email or Smartphone. You can announce the detoxification timing on social media too.
  • Work out some enjoyable activities for the digital vacation. Pick up hobbies which you have been neglecting since long. Plan an outing with friends, explore a new place on your own or simply spend some relaxed moments with family.
  • Try to spend some time in nature too as this is undoubtedly a great way to rejuvenate yourself.

To sum it up, the purpose of digital detox is to have a great time so that you feel refreshed. You might be in love with technology but a digital sabbatical is needed now and then to establish balance between online and offline lives.
