TunnelBear VPN Review
Inexpensive and a good fit for most users
Like bears? Like internet privacy? Looking for more security when you connect to a public WiFi network? Well, TunnelBear might be the VPN for you – this is an outstanding VPN service with a great sense of fun across its branding.
- User-friendly and approachable
- Extra privacy features
- Free without annoyance or unreasonable limitations
- Can’t choose which city to connect to
- Doesn’t unblock Netflix
Our grizzly friends are everywhere in TunnelBear, from the illustrations and animations used throughout the Windows, MacOS and mobile apps to the names of specific features and even what the subscription plans are called. This gives TunnelBear a charm that other VPNs can’t match.
Beneath its furry exterior, though, TunnelBear VPN does the same thing as other VPNs. It creates an encrypted virtual private network connection between your device or computer and a server elsewhere. This both protects your data on its way to and from the Internet and disguises your identity and location. What’s more, to any websites you visit and services you use, it looks like you’re based in the same city or country as the VPN server. This allows you to get past any censorship or content blocks that would normally stop you in your tracks.
First, let's see how TunnelBear compares to rival VPNs in our extensive testing.
In the table below, we pit TunnelBear against everything from totally free VPNs to the free versions of paid services. We also included our top paid VPNs (PureVPN, NordVPN, and IPVanish VPN) at the beginning for comparison purposes and even threw in Hola at the end, although again, we wouldn't recommend the Hola app due to its concerning security standards.
