Learning to code is no longer just for boy geniuses or technology nerds. Basic coding has tangible uses in your everyday life as a business owner. People who know some form of code are now everywhere. This is because not only is coding essential, it is now easier than ever to learn. Whether you pick up a book, take a class or enroll in a MOOC, there are a variety of flexible and inexpensive ways for anyone to learn to code.

Learning to code does not mean that you need to be plugged in for 16 hours a day. It does not even mean you need to stay online for 6 hours a day. You can leave to those who live and breathe programming. But if you arm yourself with a basic level of coding knowledge, you would be surprised at the value you can add to your business.

One of the best reasons to learn to code is to be able to be fluent in technology. Right now, almost every business uses technology in one part of its operations. Even if you are not a tech startup, you probably use software to manage billing, HR, accounting or any number of operations. To manage these systems, you need someone on board who knows what they are doing around a computer. When you have a basic level of knowledge yourself, you are able to make better hiring decisions. It is much easier to spot tech talent if you have an understanding of what that talent entails.

Another great reason that all business owners should learn to code is because learning code is essentially learning another language. There are many cognitive benefits to learning another language. The main benefit is that you will be able to approach problems from a new perspective.

If you are a financially minded business owner, learning to code is essential. Businesses that employ those who know programming languages can save themselves money by being able to complete work in house. You can use code to automate processes that had to be done manually before. Anytime you can automate a process, you save both time and money. If you can create these processes yourself, then you can save even more. If you become a keen coder, you also write your own programs. Some business owners reported that when they were able to combine their business knowledge with their practical coding skills, they were able to write programs that saved them money.

Finally, learning to code allows you to move your best ideas into action faster. You do not need to wait to hire a programmer to build a prototype when you can build a basic model yourself. When you have the skills to do-it-yourself, you increase the chances of your idea transforming into a new business. Creating your own prototypes has other benefits. You will understand more about product development if you can get involved. You will also be able to troubleshoot your own issues and estimate how long it will take to get the work done.

Learning to code is not just for those who aspire to be the next Mark Zuckerberg. It is for supermodels like Karlie Kloss, kids in middle school and some of the richest business people in the world. When you learn to code, you add value to many different sides of your business. Even if it seems like you are just ticking a box, having the skills now will benefit you in the future. The longer you put the off, the farther you will have to come from behind at some point.

Technology is all around you and being a luddite is no longer acceptable. Getting involved in learning something that is not only fun but will benefit your business is one of the best decisions you can make this year.
