Buffer’s Joel Gascoigne: Transparency as a Necessity for Distributed Teams

Conor Cawley

With business shenanigans making headline news on a regular basis, a little honesty can be very refreshing. And while transparency is hardly on the agenda for most corporations, Buffer is making it the center of their company culture. And it has had a lasting and positive effect on employees and managers alike.

Buffer is a simple social media management website that has made the many accounts of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and dozens of other networks that much easier to use. And while social media is important to any growing business, co-founder and CEO of Buffer, Joel Gascoigne, has made headlines because of the way he runs his business.

With transparency at the helm of his business strategy, Gascoigne has revolutionized the way remote positions are filled and managed. With only 5 of their 30 employees stationed in a sparsely-filled office space in San Francisco, this transparency-focused company culture has provided a supportive environment for Buffer and its employees to grow.

From a lack of personal message threads on HipChat to company-wide emails that keep everyone in the loop, Gascoigne knows this model is working. They have even instituted a transparent pay system that keeps everyone informed of what their coworkers are making. This not only prevents any undue speculation on the part of newer employees, but also allows for fair pay across the board no matter what. With the gender wage gap on the tongue of every reporter, activist and politician on TV, a company that is systematically fighting to keep the channels of communication open and flowing is impressive and noteworthy.
