These Days, Sitting Desks Bow Down to Standing Desks

I was talking with a friend the other day, and he was telling me that his entire office recently switched to standing desks. Almost preemptively, he answered the one question on my mind: what about people who don’t want a standing desk? His office actually installed the transitional desks, the ones that suit either a sitting or standing person.

We've seen too many cases of “laptop shoulder” and carpel tunnel to ignore the fact that our technology makes us adapt to it and not the other way around. For my friend, this transition to standing desks is amazing because he has scoliosis, and constant sitting is both painful and detrimental to his spine.

According to Smithsonian, spending more time standing can also reduce the risk of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer – you also burn more calories at a standing desk versus a sitting one. However, many of the desks available have a high price tag, can be complicated to put together, and have limited adjustable levels.

Perch Products launched a Kickstarter campaign on September 2, and within a few hours they were fully funded well beyond their initial goal. So, what makes them so popular?

They Perch Products team built the Perch Sit-to-Stand Desk so that it requires no bolts or hardware, features simple adjustments, and with a notch-based design sporting over 100 different layouts to choose from. Not to mention it’s made from Baltic Birch, a lightweight and high quality wood that can support up to 280 pounds.

Some of the other features:

  • Split Level Technology: The Perch Desk can hold a Monitor and a laptop, or two different sized monitors.
  • Cord Management: A 2” x 1.5” cut out is available on each desk to keep it clutter free.
  • Windows: With lots of open space in the back and sides of the desk, it is easy to set up your computers and cords, while also eliminating any “cubicle” feel.
  • Side Hooks: Each desk surface has a side hook that fits comfortably around the side window of the desk, eliminating any chance of wobble.

Perch Product has made it their express goal to help the world effortlessly integrate standing into everyday life, and you have to admit that the Perch Desk is a near perfect solution. After all, it's one of the rare pieces of hardware that adapts to us as humans instead of bending our backs into unnatural and uncomfortable postures.
