We know that your physical and mental health are important to your overall success. And since we want you to be successful, we offer lots of tips on how to be your healthiest. We even give you examples of what other entrepreneurial rockstars are chowing down on.
Part of being healthy is paying attention to what goes into your body. You’re a smart person. For the most part you probably know what constitutes as healthy or unhealthy food. Do you always make the best decisions? Likely not, but no one’s perfect. You probably also have some knowledge of what foods contain different vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. You might not know exactly what each nutrient does, but you know it’s not a bad idea to have some in your system.
Something you might not know, is that certain foods are actually supposed to boost brain power and cognition. The brain is a complex organ that requires certain nutrients to keep it working at its best. Here are several foods you should be eating on a regular basis to keep that all important brain muscle pumping.
1. Oily Fish
Instead of dry flakey cod or tilapia, opt for oilier, fattier fish such as salmon, trout, mackerel, herring, sardines, pilchards and kippers. They all contain high levels of omega-3 fats in the form of EPA and DHA. Omega-3s are known to improve brain function as well as heart function
There is evidence that blueberries can help improve or delay short term memory loss, according to a study out of Tufts University. Research in rats showed that blueberries help protect the brain from the damage caused by free radicals and may also reduce the effects of age-related conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease or dementia
Tomatoes contain lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that could help protect against the kind of free radical damage to cells which occurs in the development of dementia and Alzheimers. Lycopene is also shown to be important for eye health, and healthy eyes means better vision, less headaches, and less stress.
4. Pumpkin Seeds
Pumpkin seeds may be tiny, but they can have big positive effects on brain function. They’re loaded with zinc which is known to enhance memory and thinking skills. They also contain Omega 3, Omega 6, and vitamins A and E.
Broccoli is an awesome source of vitamin K, which is known to enhance cognitive function and improve brainpower. It also contains vitamins B6, B12, and folate, which the brain uses to break down homocysteine levels which can lead to forgetfulness.
You’ve probably heard of eggs being an egg-cellent (I couldn’t help myself) brain food. You also already know that they are a good source of source of protein. Well they also contain choline which is a member of vitamin B complex. Choline plays a role in the production of neurotransmitters in the brain that helps regulate mood, behavior and memory.
Avocados are packed with monounsaturated fats which can cut the risk of heart disease and lower bad cholesterol. This reduces the risk of plaque buildup and enhances blood flow.
8. Sweet Potatoes
Even if you’re trying to keep things low-carb, sweet potatoes are probably one of the nutritious carbohydrates you can put in your body. They are rich in vitamin B6 and antioxidant, which aid in improving brain power, as well as help cleanse the blood.
