Imgur Launches Android App, iOS Users Have to Wait

Today, San Francisco-based Imgur launched their mobile app for Android. The Android version has been available for beta download, but was finally compiled into a final build after the company saw a 7 to 30 percent increase in mobile visits from January 2011.

Imgur’s mass popularity is due in big part to Reddit, where the daily amount of Imgur links shared is too many to count. This symbiosis also elevated Imgur from a simple photo sharing platform to a viral image and meme viewing and sharing destination. Attracting over 4 billion pageviews with 80 million visitors every month, it was only a matter of time until they made the leap.

While this app is the first foray into the mobile world for Imgur, it already showcases the features of the website that were so attractive. First and foremost it remains free, albeit with ads. Additionally, it makes viewing, sharing, and commenting easier than ever for mobile users.

Celebrations rang out across the Internet as users realized the days of copying and pasting links to the Imgur website in text messages were finally over. And while the party rolls on for Android users, iOS adherents will have to wait until Apple gives Imgur permission to develop a counterpart for them.
