The Best and Worst Dating Apps of the Year

You may not be a fan of Valentine’s Day, but who doesn’t love love? There’s a reason that hundreds of dating sites and apps exist; and a good number of them are doing pretty well (except for the one you’re trying to get funded). People want to find romantic partners and the Internet brings more prospects to their fingertips than any bar ever could.

However, just like most apps out there, the quality of dating apps varies greatly. And just because they’re popular doesn’t mean they’re a great app.

Applause (formerly uTest) completed a comprehensive study of 97 of the most popular dating apps. They analyzed 1.5 million U.S. consumers’ ratings for strengths and weaknesses of apps that have received more than 10,000 app store reviews in Google Play and the App Store.

Each app was rated on a scale of 0-100. The average quality of all of the apps reviewed was 44, which is pretty underwhelming. In fact, only 11 of the apps with the most reviews scored over 50.  Dating app darling Tinder, with approximately 192k reviews, only earned 39.5 points, and Match, the dating site that practically started it all, scored even lower at 31 points.

The Top 10 Apps:

  • JustSayHi (88)
  • Surge (83)
  • Mingle (73)
  • Jaumo (72)
  • OkCupid (61)
  • Catch’up (58)
  • happn (57)
  • SCRUFF (55.5)
  • Moco (55)
  • Growlr (54.5)

The Bottom 10 Apps:

  • Waplog (29.5)
  • Blendr (29.5)
  • Grindr (28.5)
  • Be Naughty (26)
  • Grindr Xtra (24)
  • Hinge (22)
  • eHarmony (20)
  • Flirt (19)
  • Mamba (16)
  • Adam4Adam (11)

The more niche your demographic, the lower your score. Some of the apps that didn’t even make the cut:  Christian Mingle, Black People Meet, FarmersOnly Dating, Gaydar, Grouper, Jdate, Luxy, Seed, Wing Ma’am and more.

Here is a table ranking of the apps that have made the cut.

The world of dating apps is quite a dynamic one. It’s interesting to see how some apps scored a year ago versus today. For example, there are several that have been rocking it (eVow, Moco, SayHi, happn) that have been rocking it over the last year and increased their score, while others (Tinder, Mingle, Growlr) have dropped significantly.
