How to Create a Versatile Startup Team

Startups face some unique challenges, the biggest one being the fact that limited funds won’t allow you to hire a lot of employees. This is why you need a multi-talented startup team, where each team member can jump into several roles.

With an efficient allocation of resources and people who are ready to put in a lot of work to get the company off the ground, you can look forward to a good deal of success down the road. However, you must first build a capable and versatile team, and that takes work. Here are several things that you have to do in order to turn your small workforce into an elite force of dedicated professionals that aren’t afraid to go the extra mile for their company.

Find people with a variety of skills

While someone with an extensive IT background would be perfect for the IT department in a large company, when hiring people for a startup you want someone who is good at the technical side of things, but can also jump into two or three different roles. Be sure to ask about any hobbies, interests and skills – hiring a jack of all trades will enable your company to take on a much higher workload.

Develop strong bonds between startup team members

You don’t need a few worker bees that do as they are told – you need a band of intelligent and committed brothers and sisters, elite troops that think for themselves and leave no man behind. When looking at skill sets, you should also try to find common interests, and character traits that make your team members compatible with each other.

People with different personality types can actually work well with one another if they can find some common grounds. Forget about team building – it’s about human bonding, and nothing builds stronger friendships than the thrill and stress of being in the trenches and working hard to ensure that everyone can afford a comfortable life.

Build a fun and creative office space

Not only will a fun and unique office and informal work environment help create strong bonds between co-workers, but it will also boost productivity. Everyone needs a few breaks during the day to refresh their mind and body, and people seem to be more productive when their environment is colorful, soothing and with some interesting ways of spending their breaks. A dart board or small toy basketball hoop on the wall and personalized workstations are just some basic things that everyone can afford, but you can go for a full-on game room when your startup grows.

Reward initiative and be ready to take risks

Taking risks is the only way to find what works and what doesn’t, and you never know where a great idea might come from. Use your entire team as one big creative mind and reward initiative and curiosity. Instead of having big weekly meetings all the time, you can allow everyone to pitch any ideas they might have during work hours and give new projects a shot. Even if you may not be able to tell where something will lead, be open to unorthodox tactics and motivate everyone to think outside the box.

It takes a lot of hard work, creativity and luck to attain success, but if you do everything you can to build a loyal team of independent thinkers, then you’ll be able to stack the odds in your favor.
