Curiosity is an innate human trait – regardless of whether we’re pursuing a science career. We always want to know more about the world that surrounds us, which is why documentaries and science-related TV shows tend to be a huge success a bit throughout the entire world.
As adults, we tend to keep that curiosity alive, but more than that, we try to pass it on to our kids – and what better way to do that than having twice-a-month science projects delivered to your doorstep? That is exactly the premise behind MEL Chemistry, according to the science geeks (in their own words) responsible for it.
MEL Chemistry works on a subscription-based model. After clients input their details (address included, of course) and payment information, they are automatically in and will then received the starter kit, which features the equipment needed to perform all the experiments that will arrive in further deliveries:
Then, twice a month, clients receive a new chemistry set containing one to three interesting experiments, which are interesting for parents and children alike. Subscriptions can be cancelled at any time.
Other than the team’s science background, this project was born out of the realization that, more and more, young generations are drifting apart from science. With all the “easy appeals” offered by today’s society – brought on by video games or smartphones – they are trying to make science interesting for kids and hopefully sparking their curiosity and raising interest in the field.
Despite that, MEL Chemistry is not oblivious to the potential held by those platforms, and they decided to develop a mobile app that will provide additional information, such as structural formulas, 3D-models of molecules, and explanations on how some reactions occur. A good example is an experiment to make hydrogen bubbles explode – it is cool to watch but, with the app, it is possible to know what is happening at the molecular level:
With MEL Chemistry, both adults and children can surely satisfy some of their need for knowledge, with a great focus on chemistry, while also spending some quality time – and all this without having to leave home.
