Bored on the Metro during rush hour, sitting around at the dentist, or while waiting to meet a friend? Here’s a fun twist on a mobile app that will keep you occupied: MakerCraft Jewelry lets you select from a collection of beads and charms and drag and drop them to create a personal jewelry design. You can order it pre-assembled, or as a DIY kit with custom instructions.
Founder Carissa McClay has a background in art and jewelry and product design, so she knows how hard it is to find a piece of jewelry that is exactly what you want. As she points out:
Everyone has their own personal style, but we’re locked into buying what’s currently ‘in fashion’ rather than what we actually want. Women don’t have the time to scour the stores for a perfect piece of jewelry, and a growing ‘maker’ culture makes this compromise less and less tolerable. With MakerCraft, it is easy to get exactly what you want, with no wasted time and no compromise.
Of course, their big competition is Etsy, but Pittsburgh-based MakerCraft definitely stands apart for their high level of customization, and at Etsy, even though you’re buying something handmade, you’re still getting someone else’s design, not yours. Plus, MakerCraft’s mobile app makes them a lot more accessible.
MakerCraft demo’d at our Tech Cocktail Chicago Mobile Mixer event last night, so if you didn’t make it, be sure to check out their site today!
