I hope you're not reading this while you're driving. I mean, it would be really ironic, but would somewhat defeat the purpose of what I'm trying to talk to you about here.
Distracted driving is one of the biggest causes of accidents around the world. There are a lot of laws now (at least in the US) that make certain activities illegal while driving. In many states, you can't talk on the phone or send a message through your phone unless you're using a hands-free device. There are also laws against eating and drinking while driving. According to the Department Of Transportation (NHTSA), “mobile devices“ and blindly reaching for “food or drinks“ are the two biggest culprits surrounding distracted driving incidents.
Thankfully there are several companies that are hard at work trying to make our trips behind the wheel as distraction-free as possible.
We recently told you about MessageLOUD, the app with the text-to-voice feature that reads your emails and texts while you're driving. As soon as you get in your car the app will ask if you want to go into Drive Mode. Once you’re in Drive Mode, all of your SMS texts, WhatsApp messages, and emails are automatically read out loud (unless you customize your contacts to allow or ignore certain messages). You can then choose to delete or respond with simple swipes so that you can keep your eyes on the road. It even allows you to customize auto responses for incoming texts. You can also prioritize which messages you want to receive and which can wait until your drive is over.
2. Disposable Drink Tray by Level Solutions, LLC.
Trying to control those fast food drink trays while driving can be a huge distraction. This “hands-free” safety focused disposable drink tray (patent pending) from Level Solutions, LLC is a simple modification to the existing drink tray which incorporates a seatbelt slit that runs down the bottom of the tray. The seat belt slit is designed to easily engage any buckled seat belt on any vehicle seat. It keeps the tray secured to the seat so that the driver can focus on the road rather than keeping their tray of drinks upright.
RoadReady is an app that helps teens improve their driving skills and build good habits for the road. It allows new drivers to track supervised driving time, set goals, learn safe driving practices, and review previous driving summaries. One of the keys to preventing distracted driving is to get drivers when they're young and teach them the habits that will make them better drivers in the long run.
