Today was a momentous day for Zappos as they welcomed their employees to its new downtown Las Vegas office location inside the old City Hall building with a record setting ribbon cutting event. The event took place in the outdoor center area of the new Zappos office.

With excitement in the air, the sunny and somewhat humid day was filled with speakers and a special appearance by the Jabbawockeez. At the ribbon cutting ceremony we heard from Zach Ware (now with Project100) and his team who helped work on the campus development plan, Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh, and Fred Mossler, who reflected on the journey Zappos has taken over the last 14 years from working in a San Francisco apartment, to Henderson NV, and now to downtown, saying:

“We now feel like Zappos is home.”

The crowd applauded with excitement. Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman also welcomed Zappos downtown and shared her thoughts around the future as thousands of Zappos employees get settled into the area. Watch Las Vegas Mayor Carol Goodman welcoming Zappos downtown (below).

The own of the famed Downtown Cocktail Room and co-owner of Emergency Arts, Michael Cornthwaite, was thanked by Tony Hsieh as one of the sparks that helped turn what, at the time, was just a crazy idea into a reality. The idea of a Zappos downtown campus spurred the creation of a city revitalization project called the Downtown Project. Zappos also has a new landlord as Andrew Donner bought the old City Hall and leased it to Zappos – he shared some thoughts about the ribbon cutting and jokingly hoped that Zappos payed its rent on time.

Following all the individual appearances, RecordSetter, a startup that recently moved to Las Vegas from New York, was on hand as an integral part of the ceremony as the crowd looked to set the world record for longest ribbon cutting. Zappos handed out scissors for everyone that attended to partake in this record-setting occasion. Watch the RecordSetter festivities (below).

After the record-setting ribbon cutting and the confetti cleared, the event adjourned and rain clouds quickly moved in, seemingly from nowhere, while Zappos guests toured the downtown area campus on a scavenger hunt. The pouring rain soaked the downtown area, which could be seen as a good omen for an area that has seen drought conditions over the past decade. After the rain a double rainbow emerged – the appropriate conclusion to the three year journey that led Zappos to their new home in downtown Las Vegas.
