So, there’s a web application that will connect to your Instagram account and like some of your friend’s really old Instagram photos. And apropos of its purpose, it’s called Like Creeper.
Like Creeper was first posted on Product Hunt a few months ago but fortuitously popped up again in a Product Hunt email sent earlier today. In the days building up to April Fools Day, people across the Internet are trying to find new and innovative ways to f*ck with their friends and loved ones – Like Creeper provides such utility. By simply linking your Instagram account to the web application, it randomly chooses one of your friends and likes a really old picture from his or her Instagram account. The desired effect on the person being embarrassment, confusion, and possibly shame (considering our evolution of Instagram use over time).
Last night, I spent two hours curating a new Instagram focused on food – yes, I have turned into one of those people. Anyway, in the process of putting it together, I found myself going through popular food-based Instagram accounts and liking close to 100 of their much older photos. Considering that they were mere strangers, I didn’t consider it much of an offense; however, engaging in this kind of digital activity can be considered a major faux pas when committed on your actual friends. Something like Like Creeper allows us to possibly challenge these notions and accept this behavior as something normal rather than something deviant.
Or, I mean, it’s whatever. It’s fun, and you’ve got nothing better to do this weekend, right?
