The Microsoft Ventures Accelerator Tour is visiting 11 US cities to spread the word about their 7 global accelerator programs that run in Bangalore, Beijing, Berlin, London, Paris, Seattle, and Tel Aviv. This tour is specifically to promote the Machine Learning Accelerator in Seattle which is currently accepting applications for their new class beginning on February 2, 2016.
Boston will be the seventh stop of the tour on October 22. The city boasts some of the top educational institutions in the country, giving it a unique advantage as far as startup ecosystems. And to help out newcomers, or those who are unsure about starting up in Boston, there is even a guide to the Boston tech scene available. The city certainly does not lack in the resources department.
One Boston based startup that found success with the help of the Microsoft Ventures Accelerator is Wallflower. Their first product, Wallflower Ember™, is a connectivity device that connects to any gas or electric cooking appliance, links it to a homeowner’s mobile device to let the homeowner know if the appliance is on or off. It also gives the homeowner the option to remotely turn off the device from their smartphone.
Almost everyone’s experienced that feeling of panic–you’ve left your house and are unsure if you turned off the stove. It’s a founded fear, since cooking equipment is the cause of 46% of house fires. This Internet of Things product can help bring those statistics down. Wallflower is continuing to grow since it graduated from the Microsoft Ventures Internet of Things Accelerator. In the spring of 2015 the company raised $1.5M in a seed round.
