GeniCan Adds Shopping List Tech To Your Trashcan

Let’s face it, creating grocery lists is a pain, and more times than not, you find yourself forgetting at least one item after you’ve finished checking out. Fortunately, a new startup, GeniCan, is looking to solve this problem with a creative new idea they are announcing today at CES. Rather than pressing a button, telling your home hub/assistant to order something, or writing something down on a piece of paper that will certainly get lost, GeniCan assessed our typical flow and inserted their solution right at the end point.

It’s only when you’re throwing an item away or running low that we typically decide on replenishing it, which is exactly where GeniCan adds some brains to the process. As you throw out or recycle an item, GeniCan will be right on the can so that you can scan the barcode or activate the device through a voice command to add the item back to your grocery list. They have also partnered with Amazon to use Amazon DRS (same concept as the dash buttons) to automatically add an item to your Amazon cart.

“We’re thrilled to offer a solution to a pain point most families and households are confronted with,” saidDave Pestka, the cofounder of GeniCan. “In addition to saving users time, GeniCan has the added benefit of saving them money, since shopping with a list and sticking to it is proven to help save money at the store while reducing the number of trips.”

GeniCan is now available for pre-order and is priced at $125. It’s expected to ship in early 2017, with no specific date yet available. The device is said to last up to one year using four standard AA batteries, and will come in three different colors.
