Our research shows that Ooma is better than magicJack, thanks to its larger feature catalog, robust customer support, and popularity amongst users. This isn’t to say magicJack shouldn’t be the top choice for all businesses, though.
Read on to see exactly what you get with each provider, and to find out which will suit your business best. Or, cut to the chase and get a VoIP price quote now to make sure you get the best deal for your business.
In this guide, I’ll be focusing exclusively on Ooma Office and magicJack for Business, which are the small and medium-sized business VoIP solutions offered by the respective companies.
Ooma vs magicJack: Which VoIP Service Is Better?
With a rock-bottom starting price of $15.99 per month, magicJack for Business is a cost-effective option for solo entrepreneurs and teams under five with fairly basic VoIP needs. However, you’ll likely end up paying more for additional capabilities down the line, and its VoIP features and customer support lags behind the competition, making it less suited to growing businesses than Ooma.
Side-by-side, it’s easy to see that Ooma offers more features than magicJack, as well as other factors that may sway the undecided, such as international call rates and 24/7 support.

Best for Business Features – Winner: Ooma
When it comes to features, Ooma has the edge over magicJack. Not only does Ooma have a larger feature set, but it also includes the vast majority of them as standard. While Ooma offers three pricing tiers, magicJack has just one, magicJack for Business, with the advanced features charged as optional extras per feature, including auto attendant (a virtual assistant) which costs an added $10/month.
Accordingly, our research found that Ooma absolutely scores higher when it comes to features, netting a 4.1/5, which is considerably higher than the 2.1/5 from magicJack.

External connections
Integrations can be a huge deciding factor when choosing a new telephone system. After all, being able to connect your phone service to existing components of your business and have them seamlessly work in unison is a big advantage.
In this regard, Ooma can integrate with far more services than magicJack, like CRM, web conferencing, and live chat software. This helped Ooma secure a respectable 2.7/5 for external connections, whereas magicJack had one of the lowest scores in our research at only 1.1/5.
Equipment
When it comes to equipment, both services will sell you VoIP desk phones so that you can make use of the service. Here, Ooma just edges magicJack as they both offer Yealink model VoIP phones – Ooma, however, does also offer its own brand desk phones, which can be a good option for businesses looking for a bit more flexibility.
Yealink brand phones are tried and tested, and a good choice for businesses wanting to invest in a VoIP infrastructure.
Mobile app
As you’d expect, both Ooma and magicJack provide mobile apps on Android and iOS devices. Both do well in terms of ratings by customers on both the Apple store and Google Play store.
However, the Ooma app is clearly more popular, and more highly rated. In fact, after compiling aggregate feedback from review sites like TrustPilot, we awarded a Ooma a customer score of 4.4/5 – head and shoulders above magicJack’s category score of 1.7/5.

Best for Value – Winner: Ooma
It’s a close call between the VoIP providers in this category, but after considering all factors we’ve decided that Ooma is slightly better value than magicJack overall.
magicJack should be the runaway winner when you compare the monthly costs. However, a less robust selection of features and additional costs mean that magicJack’s seemingly cheap price could quickly rise, while Ooma includes pretty much everything you might need from the off.
But while we think Ooma’s offering is better value, magicJack’s rock bottom entry price of $15.99 per month makes it much more affordable for businesses just getting started and solo entrepreneurs.
Ooma pricing vs magicJack pricing
Ooma offers three different pricing plans, whereas magicJack only offers a single pricing plan. Ooma has the entry level Ooma Office Essentials, priced at $19.95/month/user, the more feature-laden Ooma Office Pro, priced at $24.95/month/user, and the even more robust Ooma Office Pro Plus, priced at $29.95/month/user.
magicJack for Business, meanwhile, costs just $15.99/month/user. As you can see, magicJack pricing is more affordable, with its only plan costing less than the cheapest Ooma plan, hands down. However, you have to consider what you get for the money, particularly if you plan on utilizing those additional features that cost more from magicJack. Simply put, if you have any plans to scale, paying a bit extra now for Ooma will be a lifesaver down the road.

Ooma vs magicJack Customer Service: Winner – Ooma
We’ll cut to the chase on this one: Ooma has way better customer support than magicJack and it’s not even close. Our research scored Ooma’s customer support highly at 4.5/5, which was in the top three for highest in all of our data. magicJack, on the other, scored the lowest in our research, scoring an unimpressive 2.1/5, which is not great.
Right out of the gate, Ooma offers 24/7 live chat and phone support for all of its plans, as well as knowledge base and user forums available to help yourself when you can. magicJack offers literally none of that, providing only email and phone support on weekdays from 8:30am to 6:30pm. Suffice it to say, Ooma wins when it comes to customer service over magicJack.
User experience
Take a look at online reviews of both Ooma and magicJack, and you may not be too impressed. On the review site Trustpilot, Ooma scores just 1.6/5 from 1,577 reviews, as of October 2024. magicJack doesn’t do much better, with a rating of 1.8, although it’s worth noting that it only has 57 reviews in total.
So what are the issues? A look at the reviews for Ooma suggest some users experience issues cancelling their service. For magicJack, it’s customer service issues.
If we’re being honest, there are few VoIP providers that achieve high customer ratings on Trustpilot. A look at two more major providers, RingCentral and Vonage, show scores of 2.6 and 2.8 respectively. The reality is, most users are perfectly happy with their service, and don’t feel the need to leave a review.
What’s more, the average score method doesn’t accurately reflect the most common user experience of the reviews that are left. Among Ooma’s reviews are plenty of customers who are very happy with their service, for example. In fact, 72% of Ooma review respondents have left a five star rating, totaling 1,134 out of those 1,577 reviews.

Setup options
Both VoIP options are refreshingly simple systems to get started on, but magicJack setup time is faster. In the case of Ooma, the company states that it will take around 20 minutes to set up your device and connect to the service. If you get stuck, there’s 24/7 customer support on hand too.
As for magicJack, it’s a similar situation (although the company is adamant it can have you up and running in an impressive 10 minutes), especially if you choose to bypass a physical phone and connect through the mobile app instead.
Either way, both providers are able to promise a simple setup, and users shouldn’t find any worrying barriers with either of them.
Support options
As you can see, both Ooma and magicJack offer a good range of support options, with email, and telephone support all available.
Ooma
- Live chat (24/7)
- Setup assistant
- Phone support (5am PT to 5pm PT for residential, 24/7 for business)
- Online tools
- Forums
magicJack
- Phone support (Mon – Fri, 8:30am to 6:30pm EST)
- Knowledge base
However, it’s Ooma that offers more options, with 24/7 live chat and phone support, forums complementing the usual platforms, as well as longer opening hours for its telephone support making it the clear winner when it comes to customer service.

Best for International Calling: Winner – Ooma
It’s fairly standard for VoIP providers to include domestic calls in their packages, and both Ooma and magicJack have done just that. However, if you’re a business looking to do a lot of business overseas, Ooma is by far the most attractive option.
While they both cover the US and Canada, Ooma also includes Mexico in its package free of charge, while these calls with magicJack will cost you $0.04 per minute. Calls to Puerto Rico, using Ooma, are free as well. When it comes to other international calls, Ooma really takes the lead. As you can see from the selection of prices below, calls to other countries often cost just a fraction of what magicJack charge.

Ooma vs magicJack Voice Quality: Winner – Ooma
Today it’s almost impossible for the average caller to tell the difference between an internet-based call and a landline one. This is largely thanks to its impressive sound quality, an important aspect of any VoIP provider.
When we compared Ooma vs magicJack on sound quality, Ooma came out on top. This is because the VoIP provider offers HD voice quality, with most customers seemingly happy with the sound. In fact, in a survey, 76% of Ooma Office users rated its sound quality as eight or higher on a scale of 1 to 10, and less than three percent of users reported experiencing call quality issues regularly.
There’s no similar study from magicJack (at least one they share publicly), and some viewers have reported slight issues with sound. However, we do know that the company serves over 250,000 businesses, so it’s clearly doing something right.

Verdict: Ooma vs magicJack
After working closely with our research and testing team, we found that Ooma is the stronger VoIP provider, with a more comprehensive set of features, better support, and better value overall. It’s well-suited to most businesses, particularly fast-growing ones that need the ability to scale quickly.
With a low starting price of just $15.99 per user, per month, we do acknowledge that small companies looking to make every dollar count may prefer the cheaper magicJack option, provided they don’t need those optional extra features. For everyone else though, we’d recommend Ooma. Its Office Essentials plan will suit most businesses out there, and its Office Pro plan will cater for the more demanding or call-heavy businesses.
