5 Tips for Managing Your Personal Brand

Whether you like it or not, we all have a personal brand we must manage. Whether it’s owning your own company, interviewing for a job or acting as a public figure, how you see yourself and how others view you is important to your success.

Managing and leveraging your personal capital takes constant effort and great awareness. These five tips are going to help you focus in on what you should be tweaking and perfecting to gain the confidence you need to build a strong image and stay relevant.

Tell a Story

Think of your personal brand as a way to tell your story in a clear and concise manner. Your goal should be to not leave much to the imagination. You want to clearly identify yourself, your product and your passions, so people understand your motivations and get to know you and your character.

The only way to be successful with this step is to know yourself. Figure out what makes you tick, what motivates you, what fears you have, your goals and future plans. The better you’re able to get in touch with who you really are and clearly communicate your story to your audience, the more authentic and genuine you’ll appear. 

Be Visible & Practice What You Preach

Managing your personal brand means you’ve got to be out there making things happen. A good example of this is Rotary Swing. His energy, visibility and the fact that he’s living proof of his product, is hard to top. He has built a business and a brand from his heart and it shows. Build Trust

A key aspect of managing a successful personal brand is building trust with your audience, the public or your colleagues. If you’re selling a product then it’s crucial you achieve this step. One way to build trust is to deliver on your promise. If you say you’re going to do something, then do it. If you say you’re going to follow up with someone, then do it. If you say you’re going to give someone a refund because they had a bad experience with your product, then do it. You get the point. The only way to build trust is through action and consistency.

Target Your Audience Online

Before you even start mapping out who your target audience is, you need to open and actively manage social media accounts for you or your business. Yes, not only do you have to manage your character in-person, but you need to manage your reputation online as well.

There are a few different ways you can engage with your target audience online and through social media. Publish relevant articles, join groups with people who align with your product and remember to keep your posts professional, or at least tasteful. The rise of social media and its impact on business can’t be denied. If you’re not online managing your personal brand then someone else is doing it for you.

Monitor Your Reputation

You’re feeling good about what you’ve accomplished so far and so you start to relax and get a bit too comfortable. This is exactly when surprises emerge and reputations are challenged. You need to be constantly managing, listening and perfecting your personal brand so you remain in the driver’s seat. Don’t just sit around and wait for stuff to happen.
