BuzzFeed $9 Million Facebook Settlement: Can You Claim?

BuzzFeed users could be entitled to a pay out and year's free subscription as part of a class settlement.

BuzzFeed is a publication known for spilling secrets about celebrities, but thanks to a new lawsuit, it’s the company itself that is in hot water.

The class action settlement involving BuzzFeed alleges that the company shared personal user data with Facebook without consent across a range of its sites. Now BuzzFeed is offering compensation totally $9 million to those affected.

BuzzFeed Class Action Settlement

BuzzFeed is at the center of a class action lawsuit, which accuses the company of sharing user information with Facebook, violating federal privacy laws.

The lawsuit, Peters v. BuzzFeed Inc., Case No. CACE-24-004380, applies to BuzzFeed account holders, or those that were subscribed to a digital newsletter, that watched a video through one of BuzzFeed’s websites, including buzzfeed.com, huffpost.com, tasty.com and complex.com.

It’s worth noting that BuzzFeed has consistently denied any wrong doing in this case, but regardless, has set aside $9 million to compensate those affected.

Are You Eligible for the BuzzFeed Facebook Settlement Pay Out?

If you want to claim in the BuzzFeed settlement, you’ll need to meet the following criteria:

  • Be, or have been, a BuzzFeed account holder, or digital newsletter subscriber
  • Access a video through one of the following BuzzFeed sites – buzzfeed.com, huffpost.com, tasty.com, complex.com
  • Between May 16 2021 and November 10 2023.

If you tick all three boxes above, then you can put in a claim.

How To Claim in BuzzFeed Facebook Settlement

If you’re eligible and want to claim in the BuzzFeed settlement, you’ll need to complete the form on the settlement’s official website.

If you don’t wish to be included in the settlement, or want to object, then the deadline for this October 14th.

Successful claimants in the case can expect a payment of $8, as well as a free one year subscription to BuzzFeed+, which has a value of $35.88.

The deadline for claims is November 5th. Payments will follow sometime after this period, assuming no delays or further objections to the case.
