Their story shows that you don’t have to be an expert to start a company – but you do have to be willing to learn. “We’re building the ship as we’re sailing,” says founder and CEO Dan Berger.
Social Tables started as a side project for Berger, who was working as a management consultant. Collaborating with a friend, he made the product exactly what he wanted out of event seating: a way for guests to check out their tablemates before sitting down to awkward small talk.
But Berger soon realized there were bigger fish to fry in the event planning space. Seeing other attendees’ Facebook profiles in advance won’t help if you are seated next to feuding cousins or that boring guy who wants to tell everyone his life story. Berger and his new team surveyed professional event planners, DIY brides, and corporate event organizers and realized they needed more help than the guests.
Recalls Berger, “I thought that it had all the right features. I was pretty wrong.”
Now, instead of mapping out tables with index cards, event planners can sign onto Social Tables and create seating charts. With Social Tables’s latest update, they can also customize the size of their venue and the shape of tables, and manage guests lists for multiple events – all with a smoother, prettier design.
In their office at The Fort, Social Tables has posted its mission on the wall: to change the way events are planned and attended. The product may look different than it did last year, but the vision is the same.
