While it's true that cats can be adorable, it's also an undeniable fact that cats, on the whole, are narcissistic assholes that could not give an eff how about how your relationship is going or your anxiety about whether you're going to get that promotion; really, all that matters to them is that you give them your undying attention and affection, but, you know, only if and when they want it. Apropos of these realities, a new card game on Kickstarter called “Exploding Kittens” has gained a tremendous amount of attention since it launched – enough so, that it has raised more than $3.4 million (surpassing its much smaller, intended goal of $10,000) in a mere three days.
If the style of the images look familiar, that's because Exploding Kittens is a project created in partnership with Matt Inman, the famed comic and creator of The Oatmeal. Proving even further that cats simply DGAF, Exploding Kittens is a card game in which players have to do whatever they can to prevent themselves from drawing the exploding kitten card (which depicts a cartoon of a literal exploding kitten – fun!). In order to prevent the drawing of these cards, there are a slew of cards in the deck that can either reprieve cats from their fiery destinies, such as playing the catnip sandwich card or a card that lets you skip a turn by wearing a portable cheetah butt.
Elan Lee and Shane Small are the other two masterminds behind the brilliant game, both of whom worked previously for Xbox (Lee as the chief design officer at the company, and Small as the principal art director at Xbox Entertainment Studios). On the Kickstarter page for Exploding Kittens, they describe the game as “a highly strategic kitty-powered version of Russian Roulette”. And, strangely enough, that's exactly what it is…and people are loving it.
At the time of writing this, the Kickstarter for Exploding Kittens has raised $3,409,834, with 27 days left in the campaign. That amount is much more than the project's initial goal of $10,000, which it raised in a mere 20 seconds within the launch of the campaign. Since the campaign launched, the project has raised enough funds on Kickstarter to be considered the number 11 most-funded game on the platform, the number 1 most-funded card game ever, the number 8 most-backed campaign ever, and the number 22 most-funded campaign ever.
For a deck of Exploding Kittens, simply give $20 to the campaign (an additional $15 will give you a bonus NSFW deck). Decks are expected to ship to backers in July.
Matthew Inman has spoken previously at Tech Cocktail events, where he talked about The Oatmeal, creativity, and…well…cats. You can watch that below:
