Bluetooth Low Energy Beacon (BLE) is next-generation technology especially for the retail industry and even for mass management premises. Businesses are seeking out iBeacon and Android Beacon enabled app development to leverage innovative application scopes in marketing and offer the best user experiences of their businesses.

Identifying these trends, software giants have jumped on to the BLE bandwagon and extended tech supports by rolling out new sets of features and relevant services. For instance, recently Google unveiled a new open frame format for BLE Beacons to manage the fleet of Beacons efficiently and called it Eddystone.

Google Eddystone Beacon Technology in a Nutshell
Eddystone is a robust and extensive platform to leverage multiple frame types in different use cases and versions for new functionality.

  • Eddystone has protocol specification to define BLE message format especially for proximity Beacon message exchanges.
  • Eddystone offers several opportunities in the form of its different frame types. When you use different frames individually or in combinations to create Beacons you can use them in a variety of applications running on handheld devices.
  • Eddystone is mobile OS platform agnostic, as it is cross-platform compatible so you can use it for any platform that is supporting BLE Beacons technically.
  • It is open source and available on GitHub, which makes it cost-effective and a cheaper alternative in the present market.
  • It works well with Bluetooth developer API.
  • It supports implementation on a wide range of BLE devices.
  • It permits development of new frame types, as it is highly flexible to address bespoke needs of businesses.
  • It is compliant with Bluetooth Core Specification to avoid any friction.
  • It enhances privacy and security using EIDs (Ephemeral Identifiers)
  • Eddystone offers better semantic contexts for mobile app developers to work on intricate and big scale mobile applications for brands and enterprises.
  • It gives a precise and semantic location that is associated with latitude/longitude computations. Therefore, it can win the retail business market, which is highly dependant on location based mobile applications where sole satellite GPS is not possible or not accurate enough to identify small differences.

In due course, Google has developed two APIs and among them, Nearby API works well for Android as well as iOS platforms. This API enables mobile apps to search and communicate with nearby devices and involves Beacons to set better contexts for location.

Another is Proximity Beacon API that allows mobile app developers to associate semantic locations and related data with Beacons that is stored on Cloud services. If smart developers use this Proximity API in combination with TLM (Eddystone Telemetry Framework), it helps to manage fleet of Beacons and monitor battery health, displacement, etc. issues..
