The beauty and cosmetic industry was expected to exceed $62 billion for 2016 and skincare was the largest chunk in the global market, according to a report by Men and women around the world are looking for that ultimate facial cream that will smooth out the lines and create this fountain of youth look.

This industry isn't easy to break into, especially if you are an outsider, but cofounders Mia Saini & Laura Lisowski of Oars + Alps, a new ecommerce startup selling men’s skincare products for “athleisure guys on the go,” found their way through the noise.

Mia Saini is a graduate of MIT and Harvard Business School and a former reporter for Bloomberg TV. Early last year, Mia quit her job at Bloomberg and her cofounder Laura Lisowski quit her job at Facebook to start building Oars + Alps out of 1871. Their first products are a face moisturizer, a deodorant, and a face wash in stick form.

In this episode of Tech in Chicago, the cofounders will share how they decided to start with men's skincare and certain products, how being an outsider in the industry has benefited them, how they chose their price points, how they cut through the noise, the value of content and influencer marketing, and how they landed features in Esquire and Bloomberg within months of launching and much more.
