You know it only takes a great movie (or series) to create an entire subculture. Take Star Trek, for example: It has fans across the globe, it has inspired designers of technology such as the Palm PDA, and hey, some even claim that Apple’s iPad copied Captain Picard’s device called the PADD.

What if I tell you that you can get on board with your favorite Federation crew member in a freshly released Star Trek app for iOS and Android? That’s right, there is a new Star Trek game in town.

Genera Games, makers of Frozen: Freefall and Run Forrest Run, in collaboration with CBS Interactive, have launched a new game that I’m sure you’ll be itching to try (especially, if you have seen the movies): “Star Trek: Wrath of Gems”.

This role-playing game will let you help defend the Federation of Planets, engaging in epic battles between Starfleet and the Klingons and Romulans. Can you defeat the enemies of peace and justice?

When you launch the game you can select between “The Original Series (TOS)” and “The Next Generation (TNG)” campaigns, and you’ll follow new storylines starring your favorite characters from the renowned franchise.

Besides “teaming up” with Kirk and Spock from TOS, and Picard and Riker from TNG, you will command your favorite Enterprise ship and save the United Federation of Planets! What makes this game interesting is that you will strategize your play, because you can shoot from or protect the Enterprise depending on the type of gems you match. Some gems offer only a protective shield, others provide fewer killer shots than the red gems.

The game provides three play modes: starship battles, diplomatic encounters, and one-on-one combat. As a player, you can always evolve your characters (or sell them) and ships. Of course, to upgrade you need multiple victories or to spend some cash.

Star Trek: Wrath of Gems” is free, and is available for both iOS and Android. Like every freemium model, it comes with in-app purchases, with the most expensive being a coin pack for $19.99. [Star Trek: Wrath of Gems for iOS / Android]
