Apple has launched a new repair program for owners of some of its Apple Watch models. The repair program acknowledges a fault that means a crack can appear on the screen of affected models.
Not all Apple Watches are included in the repair scheme. It only covers those with aluminum cases, and if you own an original model, or a Series 4, then you won’t be covered. We break down the eligible models below.

The Apple Watch Cracked Screen Issue
According to Apple, it has identified that some owners have found cracks developing on their Apple Watch screens, specifically around the edges. Left unchecked, this crack can, according to Apple, grow larger, until it reaches the entire circumference of the display.
The company has even issued a handy graphic of what the crack looks like:
Apple hasn’t given any word on how this issue was first spotted. But, in past cases, owners have reached out to Apple in large enough numbers that the company has investigated the problem.
Following official investigations, Apple has found the issue to be severe enough to require an official repair program. It’s a welcome offer from Apple, which has form for such repair schemes, including the recent MacBook keyboard problem.
Which Apple Watch Models are Included?
The repair program only covers aluminum models, not those that are stainless steel. In short, that means the Apple Watch Series 2 & 3 models exclusively.
It’s interesting to note that the latest Series 4 range isn’t included here. This could hint that the problem is a manufacturing one that has been ironed out in the production of the latest series.

How to Get Your Apple Watch Repaired
Anyone with an aluminium Series 2 or 3 Apple Watch that thinks they’re due a repair can arrange one in the following ways:
- Via an Apple Authorized Service Provider (Apple’s own site will let you track one down)
- Make an appointment at an Apple store to have the repair carried out
- Arrange to to mail your Watch back to Apple and have the repair done by post
Apple doesn’t indicate on its site just how long you can expect the repair to take. We wouldn’t expect you to be without your beloved Watch for too long.
However, while repairing the screen is free of charge, it’s worth reading the small print on Apple’s page. This suggests that, in some cases, other types of damage may have to be repaired before the service can be carried out. And, if this is the case, these repairs could be charged for.
The repair also doesn’t extend the standard warranty of the Apple Watch, which has long since passed for these models anyway, given that it’s a one-year warranty.
