Integrations
Integrations can be a huge deciding factor when choosing a new telephone system – after all, being able to connect your phone service to existing components of your business and have them seamlessly work in unison is a big advantage. In this regard, Ooma can integrate with Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics, Zendesk, Microsoft 365, G-Suite, and ServiceNow – some serious business heavy hitters. MagicJack? Well, we've searched, but we couldn’t actually find any reference to integrations on their website or otherwise…
Equipment
When it comes to equipment, both services will sell you VoIP compatible desk phones so that you can make use of the service. Here the two companies are tied – they both rely on Yealink model VoIP phones, offering a range of models at various prices. Yealink brand phones are tried and tested, and a good choice for businesses wanting to invest in a VoIP infrastructure.
Mobile App
As you’d expect, both Ooma and MagicJack provide mobile apps on Android and iOS devices. Both do well in terms of ratings by customers on both the Apple store and Google Play store, although it’s Ooma’s apps that are clearly more popular, and more highly rated.

Best for Value – Winner: Ooma
It’s a close call between Ooma and MagicJack when it comes to value. MagicJack should be the runaway winner when you compare the monthly costs. However, a less robust selection of features and additional costs mean that MagicJack’s seemingly cheap price could quickly rise, while Ooma includes pretty much everything you might need from the off.
Ooma Pricing
Ooma’s pricing plans come in two flavors: the entry level Ooma Office, priced at $19.95/month/user, and the more feature-laden Ooma Office Pro, priced at $24.95/month/user.
Unlike MagicJack, Ooma doesn’t provide optional extras at further charge – everything is included in the package, and if you want more features, it’s a case of paying the five bucks a month extra and upgrading to Ooma Office Pro.
In terms of hardware, Ooma offers a range of Yealink model VoIP phones, which are regularly discounted or offered in package deals. At the time of writing, Ooma are offering buy one get one free on the T23G IP Phone, offering a saving of $99. [Deal correct as of February 3rd 2021]
Ooma Packages
Ooma Office offers a wide feature set for an entry-level package, with a mobile app, hold music, and call transfer options, as well as many other features all included (see above). It also comes with, as standard, a virtual receptionist, toll free number, and fax – all aspects that MagicJack charges extra for.
Ooma Office Pro justifies its higher price tag by including call recording, a desktop app, enhanced call blocking, and voicemail transcripts. It also allows higher usage limits for extension monitoring and audio conferencing participants.
MagicJack Pricing
MagicJack’s standard price per user is $15.99/month/user. There is also an additional outlay when setting up, as you’ll need to purchase a compatible phone from MagicJack, although you can just use the free phone app if you’d rather. At the time of writing, the cheapest VoIP phone offered by MagicJack is $49.99.
MagicJack’s pricing per user per month is, on the face of it, a better deal than Ooma, but it does rather depend on the scope and needs of your business. While Ooma provides a lot of additional value thanks to bundled services, with MagicJack, a lot of these are optional extras. If you don’t need them, great – but if you do, adding on virtual assistant for an extra ten bucks a month, or virtual fax for five, means that you could be faced with a heftier bill than you’d get with Ooma.
MagicJack Packages
MagicJack for Business – MagicJack’s business packages are easy to decipher – there’s only one of them. MagicJack for Business offers features such as 3-way calling, call transfer, hold music, call logs, and more. As mentioned, the additional features – such as auto attendant, virtual fax, and toll free numbers – are charged separately.
Ooma vs MagicJack Customer Service: Winner – Ooma
User Experience
Take a look at online reviews of both Ooma and MagicJack, and you may not be too impressed. On the review site ‘Trustpilot, Ooma score a 1.7 out of 5, with 1,119 reviews. MagicJack don’t do much better, with a rating of 2.1, although it’s worth noting that it only has 21 reviews in total.
So what are the issues? A look at the reviews for Ooma suggest some users experience issues cancelling their service. For MagicJack, it’s billing and service issues.
If we’re being honest, there are few VoIP providers that achieve high customer ratings on Trustpilot. A look at two more major providers, RingCentral and Vonage, show scores of 2.4 and 1.8 respectively. The reality is, most users are perfectly happy with their service, and don't feel the need to leave a review.
What's more, the average score method doesn't accurately reflect the most common user experience of the reviews that are left. Among Ooma's reviews are plenty of customers who are very happy with their service, for example. In fact, 84% of Ooma review respondents have left a five star rating – that’s 937 out of those 1,119 reviews.
Setup Options
Both Ooma and MagicJack are refreshingly simple systems to set up. In the case of Ooma, the company states that it will take around 20 minutes to set up your device and connect to the service. If you get stuck, there’s customer support on hand too.
As for MagicJack, it’s a similar situation (although the company is adamant it can have you up and running in an impressive 10 minutes), especially if you choose to bypass a physical phone and connect through the mobile app instead.
Either way, both providers are able to promise a simple setup, and users shouldn’t find any worrying barriers with either of them.
Support Options
MagicJack
- Phone support (Mon – Fri, 8:30am to 6:30pm EST)
Ooma
- Live chat (24/7)
- Set-up Assistant
- Phone support (5am PT to 5pm PT)
- Online tools
- Forums
As you’d expect, both Ooma and MagicJack offer a good range of support options, with email and telephone support all available.
However, it’s Ooma that offers more options, with 24/7 live chat and forums complementing the usual platforms, as well as longer opening hours for its telephone support – making it the clear winner when it comes to customer service.

84% of Ooma reviewers rate their experience as five stars (Trustpilot)
Best for International Calling
It's fairly standard for VoIP providers to include domestic calls in their packages, and both Ooma and MagicJack have done just that. However, while they both cover the US and Canada, Ooma also includes Mexico in its package free of charge, while these calls with MagicJack will cost you 3.8¢ per minute. Calls to Puerto Rico, using Ooma, are free as well.
When it comes to other international calls, Ooma really takes the lead. As you can see from the selection of prices below, calls to other countries often cost just a fraction of what MagicJack charge. If you're a business looking to do a lot of business overseas, Ooma is by far the most attractive option.

Ooma offers unlimited free calling to Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico as well as the U.S.

Ooma vs MagicJack: Voice Quality
VoIP has come a long way since its inception, and today it's almost impossible for the average caller to tell the difference between an internet-based call and a traditional analogue one.
Sound quality plays an important part for a provider, and can make or break a business – if call quality isn't up to scratch, customers will simply go elsewhere.
It's something that Ooma takes seriously, so much so that it regularly sends out its own surveys to customers. In its most recent survey, 76% of Ooma Office users rated its sound quality as eight or higher on a scale of 1 to 10. Less than three percent of users reported experiencing call quality issues regularly.
There's no similar study from MagicJack (at least one they share publicly), but we do know that the company serves over 250,000 businesses, so it's clearly doing something right.
Verdict: Ooma vs MagicJack
Ooma and MagicJack have very similar offerings, but hopefully our deeper dive has made the choice clear. A closer look reveals that Ooma has the most comprehensive set of features, offers better support, and provides the better value.
Of course, we do acknowledge that fledgling companies looking to make every dollar count may prefer the cheaper MagicJack option, provided they don't need those optional extra features. For everyone else though, we'd recommend Ooma – its Office plan will suit most businesses out there, and its Office Pro plan will cater for the more demanding or call-heavy businesses.
