Let’s say you’ve just started a business and have filed all the pertinent paperwork. You’ve just bought your site’s domain, and now you’re wondering what you can publish online while the public waits for your completed site to go live.
Of course, you could choose to do absolutely nothing. But where’s the fun in that? And more to the point: how does that provide value for your potential customers?
Instead, you could choose to move forward with a Coming Soon page—a site that serves as a placeholder for your URL, informing visitors of what they can expect to find there once your real website goes live.
When designed correctly, Coming Soon pages can both inform and intrigue your audience, ensuring that your site will welcome a strong surge of traffic the day you decide to take it live for the first time.
So What’s In a Coming Soon Page, Anyway?
There’s a reason that people are heading to your website in the first place: They’re curious about what you’re doing, and they’re likely looking for information. So in order for you to begin cultivating meaningful relationships with your customers from the get go, you’d be wise to supply them with that information as soon as you possibly can.
Which is exactly where Coming Soon pages enter the fray. When done correctly, these kinds of pages can:
- Provide your audience with pertinent knowledge. What will Internet surfers find when they stumble across your website? You should consider including text that relates to what your business is called and what it does. If you want your customers to be able to get in touch with you, consider providing contact information and links to your social media profiles as well.
- Help establish your logo and branding. If you’ve already got a logo and company branding picked out, it’s never too early to start getting that stuff out in the public. Consider prominently displaying your company’s logo as well as using color schemes that help fortify your business’ unique branding.
- Pique community interest. If you’re opening a restaurant, for example, you could explicitly state your intentions. Or you could choose to go a sneakier path, perhaps littering your Coming Soon page with cryptic phrases and things of that nature. - Offer customers the ability to participate in alpha or beta launches. Maybe you’re designing a new Web-based collaborative tool or some similar kind of technological solution. If that’s the case, you could consider allowing your customers and fans to try the alpha or beta versions of your product, giving them a sneak peek of what you expect to ultimately reveal down the road. This is a great way to encourage these early adopters to become stakeholders in your brand’s success.
- Let customers sign up for updates. If someone lands on your website, there’s a good chance he or she is at least somewhat curious about what your company plans to be doing in the near future. By simply including a field that allows customers to join your mailing list, you’re able to stay connected to them while at the same time generating possible leads.
Examples of Coming Soon Pages
As you go about designing your own page, it’s important that you do your due diligence to see which other brands’ pages look most compelling to you. That way, you can steal your favorite characteristics from them and create your own unique page.
With that in mind, here are three such pages from which you can draw inspiration.
Craftsman Ave – You might not be able to tell at first glance, but this education-related company’s website is actually a Coming Soon page. In addition to a pretty cool quote by Pablo Picasso, the company’s page informs its audience about its mission: namely, connecting teachers and students from all walks of life. It also allows customers to sign up for updates.
Juicy CMS – The company, which strives to help businesses manage their digital presences more easily, has a relatively straightforward Coming Soon page. There, potential customers can sign up for a mailing list to stay informed as to when the product will be launched. On top of that, Juicy offers some more information about what customers can expect while using its content management system, as well as a link to its Twitter profile.
IME Care Center – Simple and to the point, IME Care Center’s Coming Soon page provides customers with the basics: its logo and contact information. While this stripped down page might work well enough for some brands, it’s worth noting that it probably wouldn’t hurt if the brand added links to its social profiles or allowed customers to sign up for its mailing list.
