Nokia Just Revealed Its First 5G Phone: The Nokia 8.3 5G

The Nokia 8.3 5G is Nokia's first 5G phone. Also announced today: the Nokia 5.3, Nokia 1.3, and Nokia 5310 phones.

Nokia parent company HMD today announced four new phones in a livestream event, though one device, the Nokia 8.3 5G, stood out from the pack. It’ll be Nokia’s first 5G phone, one they’re calling “the world’s first global 5G smartphone.”

Also announced: the Nokia 5.3, Nokia 1.3, and Nokia 5310 phones.

The livestream didn’t take much time to dive into this first product announcement, so we won’t, either. Here’s what to know about the Nokia 8.3 5G, which is available this summer for €599.

Nokia 8.3 5G

The phone benefits from the first global 5G new radio coverage and is the first-ever smartphone powered by the new Qualcomm 5G RF Front end module solution, which is part of its Qualcomm Modular Platform. This means it’ll support a wider variety of new 5G radio bands, covering high and low frequencies from 3.8Ghz to 600Mhz.

The device’s PureView quad camera with ZEISS optics was also hyped up at the livestream event, which mentioned the “cinematic effects” like blue flare, and an adaptive display that dynamically adjusts to best accommodate a variety of light sources and strengths.

Here are the specs:

  • Display: 6.8 inch display
      • Auto-upscales SDR to HDR
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G
  • Battery: 4,500mAh
  • Cameras: PureView quad camera with ZEISS optics
    • 64-megapixel camera, 12-megapixel ultrawide camera, 2-megapixel macro camera, and 2-megapixel depth sensor
    • 24-megapixel front camera
  • Video: 4K with 21:9 ratio
  • Security: Built-in fingerprint sensor
  • RAM: 6GB/8GB
  • Storage: 64GB/128GB

The device will be available starting at €599 (that’s about $640 in US dollars), and is coming “this summer,” though no specific date was named. The version with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage will cost a little more, at €649 or around $695.

Should you get it?

If you’re looking for a solid 5G device, this one fits the bill. The aim is to bring 5G to everyone, and it comes with perfectly respectable specs, good price, and an attractive design as well.

Nokia 5.3

HMD will also release three more mid-range devices. First up is the Nokia 5.3, also featuring a quad-camera, though with a less impressive main camera at only 13 megapixels. The portrait mode is a selling point, and the device also claims a 2-day battery life, one of Nokia’s signature promises.

Here are the specs:

  • Display: 6.5-inch display
  • Cameras: Quad-camera array
    • 13-megapixel camera, a 5-megapixel ultrawide angle camera, a 2-megapixel macro camera, and 2-megapixel camera
    • 8-megapixel front camera
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 665
  • Battery: 4,000mAh
  • RAM: 4GB
  • Storage: 64GB

It’ll be here soon, too. The phone is available later in April, priced at a nice €189 (about $200 US).

Nokia 1.3

Next up is the Nokia 1.3, a budget phone that comes with the Google Camera Go photography app pre-installed. Here are the relevant specs:

  • Display: 5.7-inch
  • Operating System: Android Go
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 250
  • Camera: 8-megapixel rear
  • Charging: Micro USB charge port
  • Headphone jack: 3.5mm

It’ll be available in early April, for just €95, which is around $101.

Nokia 1.3

Nokia 5310

Finally, there’s the bar-shaped Nokia 5310, a phone that looks straight out of 2007, likely because it’s based on a model from that year. Here’s what to expect:

  • 2G only
  • Nokia Series 30+ OS
  • Plays MP3s, FM radio
  • Dual front-facing speakers
  • Colors: White/Red and Black/Red

Already available now, March 2020, at a global average retail price of €39 or around $42 US dollars. Should you get it? If $42 is your price range, sure, why not.
