Last week, Reuters released its Top 100 ranking of the most innovative universities in the world, topped by Stanford, MIT, and Harvard.

Also included in the top 10 were several public university systems: the University of Michigan (#5), the University of Texas (#7), and the University of Wisconsin (#8).

The ranking used Reuters data to help identify which institutions are contributing the most to the science and technology industries on a global scale. The criteria for analysis included:

  • Number of patents filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization
  • Patent success (ratio of applications to grants)
  • Percentage of patents filed in the US, European, and Japanese patent offices (to indicate an important, global invention)
  • Number of times a patent is cited by other patents
  • Percent of patents cited by other patents
  • Total journal articles published
  • Number of times a journal article is cited by patents
  • Number of times a journal article is cited by other articles
  • Percentage of journal articles written with a co-author from a commercial company (to indicate possible commercial application)

Among the top 100, about half the universities are located outside the United States, including nine in Japan. The highest-ranked foreign universities are the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (#10) and Imperial College London (#11). Switzerland has the most innovative universities per capita, with three in the top 100.

“The institutions recognized here most reliably produce original research, create useful technology, and have the greatest economic impact. They are the surest bets for anyone seeking to invest in and create real innovation,” says Reuters.
