BigCommerce is a great ecommerce website builder for ambitious businesses striving to scale and grow but still offers pricing tiers starting from just $29.95 per month.
That means you can get a fully-functioning ecommerce website with huge growth potential for less than a monthly New York Times subscription. And on top of that, BigCommerce regularly offers deals and discounts, meaning that you could save even more.
The platform has two more fixed-cost pricing tiers: the $71.95 per month Plus, and the $269.96 per month Pro. It also has a bespoke Enterprise plan for larger online stores, which has no fixed price.
Overall, if you consider the price plans in light of the sales functionality and features BigCommerce offers, as well as the opportunity for growth it gives your business, it's fair to say BigCommerce offers better value than its top competitors such as Shopify.

BigCommerce Pricing Plans
BigCommerce has four pricing tiers, each of which is designed to cater to businesses in different phases of their development.
BigCommerce’s Standard tier is meant for ecommerce sites that are just starting up. The low $29.95 per month cost means that it’s ideal for businesses looking to test the water with minimal overhead.
BigCommerce’s Plus and Pro tiers are meant for ecommerce sites that are really hitting their stride. These tiers offer increased maximum sales caps and more advanced sales features, such as abandoned cart recovery.
BigCommerce’s Enterprise tiers, meanwhile, are really meant for first-class businesses in need of custom solutions. There’s no fixed price as BigCommerce will offer you a bespoke plan for your business’ needs.
What’s more, you won’t have to pay transaction fees on any plans – unlike some ecommerce platforms – plus you get unlimited products, storage, and bandwidth.
BigCommerce Standard
- Best for startups and small businesses
- $29.95 per month or $359.40 per year
Despite its low price, BigCommerce Standard has all the tools you need to start an online store. You’ll be able to sell an unlimited number of products, you can use pretty much any payment processor you want (unlike Shopify), and it even lets you integrate sales from bricks-and-mortar stores with its point of sale support.
You won’t get all of BigCommerce’s features on the Standard plan – credit card storing, abandoned and persistent shopping carts, for example – but there’s definitely enough here to get started with.
BigCommerce Plus
- Best for growing businesses
- $71.95 per month (when paid annually)
BigCommerce Plus doesn’t do a great deal to up the ante over the Standard plan, if we’re honest. However, it does allow you to sell up to $150,000 worth of products in a year, compared to just $50k on Standard.
You do get access to some slightly more advanced sales features, including customer grouping to reward loyal customers, as well as store credit cards. It’s a useful plan for businesses looking to reach the next level.
BigCommerce Pro
- Best for developed businesses
- $269.96 per month (when paid annually)
BigCommerce Pro is meant for established, successful businesses. You get access to Google customer reviews – which can be hugely important for earning customer trust – and have the option to import a custom SSL from a third party provider if you already have one.
The big difference, though, is that your sales limit jumps from $150k per year to $400k.
BigCommerce Enterprise Plan
- Best for the biggest businesses
- $POA
There’s no set price for BigCommerce Enterprise — you have to call up and agree to one with BigCommerce.
As a result, it’s a bit tricky to say whether it’ll be good value for money. However, you’ll be able to sell over $400k per year, while your site will get custom product filtering and priority access to help and support features.

Skullcandy uses BigCommerce to run its online store.

BigCommerce is one of the best ecommerce platforms on the market. It supports a wide variety of sales channels, includes loads of well-optimized online storefront features, and it's competitively priced to boot.
Using BigCommerce for Free
BigCommerce doesn't have a free plan, but interested users can sign up for a free trial period lasting 15 days.
That's not out of the ordinary for a website builder like BigCommerce — top rivals including Wix, Shopify, Squarespace, and Volusion all offer 14-day free trials in place of an ongoing free plan. The only outliers are Square and Big Cartel, which do indeed offer free plans. Each comes with some limits: Square still charges a small fee for each purchase, and Big Cartel's plan limits sellers to a maximum of just five products.
We'd recommend trying out BigCommerce for a few weeks before committing, in order to verify that its features cover all your needs.
BigCommerce Pricing vs Competitors
When it comes to entry level plans, BigCommerce's pricing of $29.95 for its Standard plan is higher than the industry average, which tends to be in the low-to-mid-twenty-dollar range.
But the value that BigCommerce's plans have to offer is high across the board as well, meaning that the cost-to-value ratio pushes it above some alternative options that may technically be cheaper. Our most recent round of testing ranks BigCommerce at 4.5 stars overall out of a total of 5 stars. That's tied with or above half of our top-rated website builders, including Square (4.5 stars), Volusion (3.6 stars), and Big Cartel (3.3 stars).
Still, a few website builders remain strongly competative. Here are the other services to consider and their starting costs.
Wix
The entry-level Wix Business Basic costs $27 per month, paid annually, while the other two more advanced options cost $32 per month (Business Unlimited) and $59 per month (Business VIP).
Our top-rated website builder overall, Wix delivers unbeatable features, designs, ease of use, and help and support options. The creative freedom that results makes it a fit for any business model, from drop shipping to multi channel marketing. It's not perfect — it's complex enough to require a strong learning curve, and the knowledge center could be better — but it delivers a high value for the money.
Shopify
Paid annually, the Basic Shopify plan costs $26 per month, several dollars underneath the comparable BigCommerce entry-level pricing of $29.96 per month. That gap closes for the other two plans, as the main Shopify plan is $71 per month (compared to BigCommerce's $71.95 per month plan) and the Advanced Shopify plan is $266 per month (compared to BigCommerce's $269.96 per month plan).
Shopify is another very attractive option overall, as it's a great all-in-one option, particularly for store owners with large inventories, thanks to multi channel support and lots of integrations.
Squarespace
The Squarespace plan rates are even better than Wix or Shopify: The entry-level Business plan starts at $23 per month, the Basic Commerce plan is $27 per month, and the Advanced Commerce plan is $49 per month. Those prices are paid annually.
Squarespace's strengths lie in its unbeatable ease of use, as well as its tools for aiding with visual marketing. The pricing is another reason why it's among our favorites — BigCommerce's lowest plan still costs $29.96 per month, making it more expensive than Squarespace's mid-level plan! Granted, Squarespace has a few downsides, most notably slower website speeds and limited template options.

Final Thoughts — Is BigCommerce Good?
BigCommerce is designed for serious ecommerce platforms, and is the absolute best website builder when it comes to inventory management, thanks to great tools and standout backend functionality. If your online presence must scale up to compete with enterprise-sized businesses, than BigCommerce is for you.
Yes, there are website builder platforms that have arguably more attractive templates — Wix is one of the more user-friendly ones and perfect for a small boutique store thanks to its competitive pricing, while Shopify offers plenty of third-party apps and strong multi channel integration. But the templates shouldn't matter as much as the underlying ecommerce platform, and BigCommerce gives you one of the best around.
With BigCommerce, your customers can get their shopping done quickly and easily, and you can scale up a truly huge online store. If BigCommerce sounds like your kind of platform, get started here.
