We took the provider out for a spin recently and found it to be a relatively simple solution that you won’t find difficult to get to grips with – even if you haven’t used a system like this before. We were particularly impressed with the way GPS Insight will let us track the location of vehicles with a live map, direct managers toward upcoming maintenance needs, and generate reports on everything from idling times to vehicle recalls.
However, it lacks some alerts for traffic and weather changes (although these conditions are tracked on the live map itself) and you have to pay extra for things like ELD compliance tools. That being said, it’s still a sturdy but modest software that offers an affordable solution for small and medium fleets.

GPS Insight offers all the basic trappings a fleet management system needs. It tracks vehicles, maintenance needs, and fuel usage. It provides managers a live map, alerts, and plenty of data-crunching report templates while giving drivers the mobile app they need to log hours of service and complete vehicle inspections while on the go. Paid add-ons also cover dash cam and trailer tracking integrations, as well as asset tracking.
The system doesn’t have advanced capabilities in categories like driver safety (in contrast, Motive has detailed safety coaching tools) or fuel tracking (Azuga offers alerts for low fuel or the closest gas stations), but it supports the core needs of any last-mile or long-haul fleet.

A drop-down menu marked “Map Options” lets users choose between the default, grayscale, satellite, or terrain views. Up-to-date traffic and weather conditions can be overlaid on the map as well. While no alerts can be set for traffic or weather, the map itself helps managers see at a glance which vehicles may be coming up to a traffic jam or journeying through bad weather.
As a complement to the map itself, a left-hand sidebar can be toggled on or off, and serves to list all active vehicles and assets, so managers can view specific vehicle details, from how long a vehicle has been stopped to its current mileage. Also, the map includes a countdown on the upper righthand side, listing the next refresh time: For our demo, this was 30 seconds, but it may vary depending on your preferred software package.

GPS Insight makes it easy to generate new reports covering all the data it collects on vehicle use and fleet needs. The report categories include Activity, Diagnostic, Driver, Landmark, Speeding, and Stop Detail, along with a custom section for managers who want to go off-book by creating their own personalized report.
Compliance and Safety
If your fleet is logging its inspection reports late or failing to track the digital paperwork after the fact, GPS Insight can help. The service offers mobile apps for fleet drivers that can handle ELD compliance and DVIR reports, two key compliance needs for US commercial fleets. Drivers can upload photographs of vehicle defects as well, streamlining communication and generating a clear paper trail for the record.
A “Driver Scorecard” report template allows managers to score their drivers’ safety habits to isolate problem areas and discourage events like speeding or harsh braking.

The software’s “Maintenance” landing page gives users a dynamic list of upcoming service needs. Thanks to toggle buttons, the list can be sorted by vehicle, type of service, or due date, and a search bar allows for specific vehicles or services to be pulled up quickly.
Once completed, each service can be checked off, so managers have visibility on which tasks are still waiting in the wings. Regular vehicle maintenance is particularly important for fleets that are constantly on the road. Replacing your oil or brakes before they cause a breakdown or collision is always cheaper, safer, and better for the environment.
Adding vehicles
GPS Insight’s role-based system means that some users can’t add new vehicles to the tracking software. If your account has the “Vehicle Admin” permission, you should see a section marked “Vehicles” on the left-hand menu column on your dashboard.
From there, you’ll be able to click “add vehicle” and fill out the profile fields in your Vehicle Editor. This includes data such as the odometer miles, make and model, fuel capacity and type, license state, plate number, VIN, and a “vehicle label” so that the vehicle can be easily searched and found within the GPS Insight software.

GPS Insight offers the basics for keeping an eye on your fleet’s fuel usage. The service’s fuel-centric alerts are limited to one focused on idling. This helps reduce unneeded fuel burning by alerting managers when a driver has kept their engine running without any actual vehicle movement.
The other fuel-focus software features are a few reports: Fuel Usage Detail, which calculates each vehicle’s gallons used per hour, and Fuel Usage Summary, which tracks monthly fuel consumption. Fleets that need advanced fuel-tracking tools may need to look elsewhere. Samsara and Verizon offer a broader range of fuel reports and alerts, while Azuga has the most specialized fuel tracking tools in the fleet management industry.
What’s New in GPS Insight in 2024?
In March 2024, GPS Insight released an update to its asset tracking features within its Manager App: Users can now view assets on the map, can pull up an asset list from within the map section, and can search (with filters) to find the exact assets they need. Asset trip histories are also available.
In June, the GPS Fleet Tracking Portal added a maintenance page that holds all of a fleet’s scheduled maintenance services in one easy-to-search location.
